A Proven Work Horse Grinder for over 10 years
I love this grinder! grind everything from espresso to french press with this grinder. Read this entire review to see the details.
I bought the predecessor to this grinder over 10 years ago. My grinder is IDENTICAL to The Encore with two exceptions: 1) the gear mechanism on my original grinder was inferior to this one's and, 2) my grinder has a manual timer instead of the on/off switch.
About three years ago when the gears on my predecessor grinder stripped, Baratza shocked me. I thought I would have to spring for a new grinder. I wasn't very thrilled with that prospect. But after a little googling, I discovered Baratza was replacing the entire gear assembly for only $15 to cover shipping. This was for a 7 or 8-year-old grinder that was out of warranty by 6 or 7 years. Amazing! I got the kit, read the instructions, watched the video and in about an hour had my grinder going again.
Shortly after that, I replaced the burrs 'cause I thought I should, although I'm not sure I needed to. I also moved some spacers (already on the grinder) that allow it to grind finer than the factory settings for better espresso grinds. I suspect you can do the same on the Encore, although I don't know for certain.
Short and sweet: I'm a certified coffee snob and I absolutely recommend this grinder - especially as an entry-level grinder. If you have a blade grinder the single most significant thing you can do to improve your cup - regardless of how you brew - is to buy this grinder!
