What is an E61 group head?

Created in 1961 by, the E61 group head has been a staple of prosumer espresso machines for quite some time. Built for quality and longevity, the E61 group head has been the most used group for one reason - it far exceeds any competitor. Designed by Ernesto Valente, the E61 was first installed on the Faema E61. He named it after the E61 after the solar eclipse of 1961. 

What makes it so special?

The E61 group head is not only heated, but consistently heated. Consistent brew temperatures translates to a much better, more flavorful shots of espresso on a consistent basis. The E61 uses a thermosiphon heating unit to constantly be pulling hot water from the machine's boiler to the group head and back. It's this constant circulation of hot water that keeps the machine heated and ready-to-go at a moments notice as long as the machine is powered on. 

Benefits of E61 group head espresso machine

As mentioned above, consistent brew temperatures achieved by thermosiphon on the E61 is a massive benefit that isn't talked about enough. When it comes down to it, the two main ingredients in the espresso making process are heat and pressure. The E61 group head ensures stable temperatures at the group head and throughout the machine entirely. 

Additionally, any E61 group head will give you a manual operation. Operated by a lever, pre-infusion is also achievable on the E61 by simply operating the group head prior to fully engaging the machine's pump. This process will evenly douse your coffee grounds before pressure is enacted to provide a much more rounded shot of espresso.
