Brewing espresso?

Match the roast to the drink.

Straight shots

Light to medium roasts show off fruit and florals. They like a finer grind and a hotter, longer shot.

Lattes and cappuccinos

Medium to medium-dark roasts with chocolate and caramel notes cut through milk best.

Classic Italian style

Dark roasts are bold, low in acidity and forgiving to dial in.

Questions people ask us

What roast is best for espresso?

For lattes and cappuccinos, medium to medium-dark roasts with chocolate and caramel notes cut through milk best. For straight shots, try a light or medium roast and grind a little finer. Any coffee here can be espresso with the right recipe.

Should I buy whole bean or ground coffee?

Whole bean if you have a grinder, because coffee stays fresh longer before it's ground. Many of our coffees can also be ground for your brewer; choose the grind on the product page.

What do tasting notes mean?

They're the flavors the roaster tastes in the coffee itself. Nothing is added: "berries" means the coffee tastes fruity, not that it's flavored.

What's the difference between light and dark roast?

Lighter roasts keep more of the coffee's origin character, so they taste brighter, fruitier and more floral. Darker roasts taste richer and more chocolatey, with less acidity and a heavier body.

How is your decaf made?

Most of our decafs use an EA (ethyl acetate) process, with EA made from sugarcane or from the coffee fruit itself. Some use the Swiss Water process, which uses only water. Each product page says which.
