Before you choose

The Solo has no steam wand

$1,395 buys two very different machines

The Solo is espresso only. No steam wand, so no lattes, no cappuccinos, no flat whites. It is built that way on purpose, for people who drink espresso straight.

The Tempo costs the same and does steam milk.

If you drink milk drinks, the Solo is the wrong machine at any price.

Side by side

What actually separates them

The columns that decide it are steam, pump and plumb-in. Everything else is detail.

The A53 Direct Plumb is the A53 Mini with the reservoir removed. Without a water line under the counter it is not an upgrade — it is a machine you cannot fill.

Straight answers

Which one should you buy

You drink espresso straight and nothing else
Solo — $1,395
No steam wand means no compromise elsewhere. Add flow control for $100 if you like to tinker.
You make one or two milk drinks a morning
Tempo — $1,395
Single boiler, saturated group, flow control paddle included. Put what you save into a grinder.
You want a real dual boiler in a small space
A53 Mini V2 — $2,595
Brew and steam at once, under a cabinet. The most popular LUCCA for a reason.
You want it quiet, or you're plumbing it in
M58 Sunto — $2,995
Rotary pump and an E61 group. The one to pick if the machine lives in an open-plan kitchen.
You have a water line and never want to refill
A53 Direct Plumb — $2,995
Only if the plumbing already exists. There is no reservoir to fall back on.
You want the most capable one
A53 Pro — $3,495
Rotary pump, 2.5L steam boiler, adjustable steam pressure and switchable plumb-in.

One thing we tell people on the phone: if you are choosing between a bigger LUCCA and a better grinder, take the grinder. It changes the cup more than moving up this list does.

Common questions

Everything you want to know

What is the difference between the Solo and the Tempo? +

Both are single boilers at $1,395. The Solo has no steam wand and is built for espresso only. The Tempo steams milk and includes a manual flow control paddle and programmable pre-infusion. If you make milk drinks, buy the Tempo.

What is the difference between the three A53 machines? +

The A53 Mini V2 at $2,595 is the base machine with a reservoir. The A53 Direct Plumb at $2,995 is the same machine connected to a water line instead, with no reservoir. The A53 Pro at $3,495 adds a rotary pump, a larger 2.5L steam boiler, adjustable steam pressure, and the ability to switch between plumbed and reservoir.

Is the A53 Direct Plumb an upgrade over the A53 Mini? +

Only if you have a water line under the counter. It has no reservoir, so without plumbing there is no way to fill it. If you want the option of both, the A53 Pro is the one that switches between them.

Rotary or vibratory pump — does it matter? +

Mostly for noise and plumbing. A rotary pump is noticeably quieter and can connect to a water line; the M58 Sunto and A53 Pro have one. Vibratory pumps are louder but perfectly capable, and they are what the A53 Mini and the entry machines use.

Who actually makes LUCCA machines? +

They are designed to a specification and built in Italy by established manufacturers. La Spaziale builds the A53 family; Quick Mill builds the M58 Sunto in Milan and the Solo. Both have been making commercial equipment for decades.

Do I need flow control? +

If you drink light roasts or enjoy dialing in, yes. It lets you shape pressure across the shot instead of holding nine bar throughout. If you want to press a button and get consistent espresso, skip it and spend the money on your grinder.

Which LUCCA should I pair with which grinder? +

Whichever machine you choose, the grinder matters more than the step up to the next model. If you are deciding between a bigger LUCCA and a better grinder, take the grinder — it changes the cup more. Call us and we will suggest a pairing for your budget.

Still not sure
