Is your water killing your espresso machine?
Scale is what ends espresso machines — not brand, not build quality, not what you paid. Enter a test-strip reading and find out where your water sits against the Specialty Coffee Association's range, and what to do about it.
Moderate scale risk
You will get scale, but slowly
Your alkalinity is above the SCA range. Scale will build over years rather than months. A filter that reduces alkalinity will more than pay for itself over the life of the machine.
In range. Enough mineral content to extract properly.
Above range. This is where scale comes from.
What to do
- Fit an inline filter that reduces alkalinity, not just a carbon taste filter.
- Descale on schedule — every 3 to 6 months at this level.
- Retest after any filter change, and whenever your utility changes source.

Three ways to find out, cheapest first:
- A test strip. Around $10 for a pack. Dip, wait, compare. Accurate enough for this decision.
- Your water utility's annual report. Free. Search your city plus "consumer confidence report" — hardness and alkalinity are in there, though the figures are system averages.
- Your softener's display, if you already have one. Remember it is treating the whole house, not the machine.
Why alkalinity matters more
Total hardness gets the attention, but carbonate alkalinity is what precipitates inside a boiler and on a heating element. It is also what buffers acidity, so too little makes coffee taste flat and sharp.
That is why very soft water is not the safe answer. Below the SCA range you trade scale for dull extraction and, in some machines, corrosion.
Ranges from the Specialty Coffee Association water standard: calcium hardness 50–175 ppm as CaCO₃, total alkalinity 40–70 ppm as CaCO₃, TDS target 150 ppm. Conversion used here is 1 °dH = 17.85 ppm as CaCO₃.
Test strips are approximate and water supplies change through the year. This is guidance for choosing treatment, not a warranty position — check what your manufacturer requires, since some warranties specify water conditions.
